Waaipoort, an ecovillage in formation, and a future major center for permaculture in South Africa.

Publié le par David

After our one-month visit to Retsogile and our short visit to Kruger Park, we are off to visit Michelle and Thomas who are starting a large permaculture project in the Free State and who need volunteers. Thanks to Shelley for these good recommendations. Waaipoort was really a favorite for us.

The permacultural approach is already integrated in its globality and coherence. The farm is also in Biodynamics.

Waaipoort is a nascent ecovillage, for the moment 6 people live almost full-time there. Two couples, and two singles. Michelle and Thomas, John and Yvette, Caroline and Honnest. But they want to welcome more people, both volunteers and new inhabitants and especially young people, with children to rejuvenate a little the average age. There is space and you are welcome, get the message across ....

It is a beautiful place, rather isolated, very dry, with cool winters and good frosts at night, it is at 1700 meters of altitude. The summers are warm and (normally) quite rainy.

Two small springs supply it with water, but recently after two years of drought, they begin to dry up, and this is beginning to cause problems for the small community. It is necessary to ration the showers, the plants of the nursery pass in first (plants and children first, it is well known). But they will find solutions, it's on, it's just a hard time to pass. And then the rainy season arrives, hoping it will not be "jumping" like last year.

In all, the farm extends over 120 hectares, with a quarantine very flat and with a good thickness of soil, the rest in rocky meadow perfect for the animals.

The Free State bears its name well, wide open spaces and still large open spaces, just beautifull ...

There is a large nursery of about 800 square meters, as well as two small half-buried greenhouses (Walipini) which prevent frost and a vegetable garden of just over 1000 square meters.

Many permacultural techniques are used on the farm. The garden is grown according to John Jeavons' "bio intensive" method. The compost is prepared according to the Berkeley method and the effective microorganism (EM) is used virtually everywhere. Bio-dynamic preparations are also used.

For a little more than a year, a big job has already been done, ponds have been dug, as well as Swales to keep rainwater on the farm, and several hundred fruit trees and others have been planted , Mainly along the swales. We went together to plant 7 apple trees in memory of Bill Mollison, who died just before we arrived on the farm. In five years the farm will have changed completely, a miracle of permaculture ... This difficult, arid and poor environment will soon leave room for an abundant fruit forest, a large vegetable garden with rich and fertile land. .

An ideal place to show the effectiveness of permaculture.

There are also 6 cows on the farm, including two calves. Two other cows will soon give birth. And then there are also three rescue horses (one of them had an ear torn off by a barbed wire fence), which for now are not ready for work in the fields, nor even to be mounted. But we are sure that thanks to the attentive care of Yvette, they will quickly regain confidence in the human race.

Let us not forget the fifty magnificent chickens, as well as the goose and the jar and their little chicks just emerged from the eggs.

And then also magnificent praying mantis ...

During this week we participated in the joy and the good humor to the construction of a house in socks of earth. The seals go up and down in a quiet rhythm between the jokes of each other.

This house will be used for seed storage. Well insulated and with a large thermal mass, the temperature is almost constant throughout the year. Other houses of this type are provided. One for hosting future volunteers.

Thomas is an expert in permaculture, he is a teacher and gives PDCs, this past week in volunteering will have taught us a lot. It also produces vortex generating systems, with large basins made of various materials.

Small shrubs will also be planted in home-made pots from large PVC pipes. It gives tall pots for root development, cheap, and reusable many times.

A cylinder of about 25 cm in height is cut, it is also cut in the lengthwise direction, and a small ring is cut which will tighten the whole. At the time of planting, the ring is removed, and the cylinder can be opened to remove the earthen cap and plant ...

On Friday, 2 days before our departure, Thomas took us on a tour of the area, we went to check the flow of the springs, because the tanks were almost empty. And indeed, one of the sources had a very low flow, after two years without rain, it's quite normal. The farm would probably need larger tanks to store more water, and maybe also a well. But here it is necessary to fetch the water to more than 100 meters and the blow of such drilling is quite important.

Small walk with Thomas, we check the source because it really flows gently ... And then we appreciate the view from the heights ...

And then we went to visit the nearby caves, with the old paintings of the Bushmen, some probably more than thousand years, while others are more recent, 200 years around.

There are many animals, magical signs, scenes of war, white people with their hats, we can even recognize the signs of masculine and feminine ...
